We can classify the types of inbound links into three main categories based on their origin and method of obtainment:
Natural or Organic Links
These links are obtained without any direct intervention, simply because others find the site’s content valuable and relevant.
- Organic Links: Obtained naturally when other websites link because the content is valuable.
- Editorial Links: Generated when media outlets or authority sites mention and link to content.
Links Built
These links are the result of proactive actions to obtain links through various marketing and relationship strategies.
- Guest Blogging Links: Earned by guest posting articles on other blogs, including return links.
- Directory Links: These are obtained by registering the site in industry- or region-specific directories.
- Blog Comment Links: These can be achieved by commenting in a useful and non-spammy way on related blogs.
- Product Recommendation Links or Testimonials: These are obtained by providing testimonials that providers use on their sites.
Social and Community Links
These links emerge from active participation in social platforms and online communities where relevant content is shared.
- Social Media Links: Generated by sharing content on social networks, although they are usually “nofollow”.
- Forum and Community Links: They arise by participating in forums and communities, adding value with relevant links.
- Infographic Links: Obtained by creating and sharing infographics, getting others to link to them.
- Public Relations Links: These are generated through mentions in influential press articles or blogs.
- Resource Pages: Earned by being included as a resource on thematic compilation pages.
